Post-Op Dental Care Tips from Your Dentist

July 14, 2025

At Oak Dental Frisco, we’re committed to helping you heal comfortably and safely after your dental procedures. Whether you've just received cosmetic restorations, had a tooth extracted, or completed a crown or filling, proper post-operative care is essential for long-term success.

Below are detailed home care instructions from your Frisco dentist to help you protect your smile and avoid complications.

After Cosmetic Reconstruction

Adjusting to your new smile takes time. Your bite may feel different for several days as your brain adapts to the new positioning and thickness of your teeth. If you notice any persistent high spots or bite issues, call Oak Dental Frisco for an adjustment.

What to expect:

  • Mild sensitivity to hot and cold is normal for a few days.
  • Gums may be sore—rinse with warm salt water 3 times a day.
  • Tylenol or Ibuprofen every 3–4 hours can ease discomfort.
  • You may temporarily notice changes in your speech or increased saliva production. This should normalize within a week.

Protect your new smile:

  • Brush and floss daily to prevent plaque buildup.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods that can damage restorations.
  • Limit foods and drinks that cause staining (coffee, tea, red wine).
  • If you grind your teeth or play sports, ask us about a custom mouthguard or nightguard.

After Crown and Bridge Appointments

Crowns and bridges are completed over multiple visits. Temporary crowns are placed to protect your teeth in between.

During your treatment:

  • Avoid eating or drinking hot liquids until numbness wears off.
  • If a temporary crown comes off, contact us and bring it with you to have it re-cemented.
  • Avoid sticky foods, hard items, or chewing on the side with the temporary.
  • Brush normally, but floss carefully—pull floss out sideways to avoid dislodging the temporary.

Sensitivity is normal and usually resolves within a few weeks. If your bite feels uneven or discomfort persists, don’t hesitate to call our Frisco dental office.

After Tooth Extraction

Proper healing begins with the formation of a blood clot at the extraction site.

Do immediately:

  • Bite down on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes after your appointment.
  • If bleeding continues, use fresh gauze or a moistened tea bag and apply firm pressure.

Avoid for 72 hours:

  • Rinsing, smoking, alcohol, using straws, or brushing near the extraction area.
  • Vigorous physical activity or bending over, which can cause bleeding.

Swelling and pain are normal for the first 48 hours. Use an ice pack and take prescribed medications as directed. Stick to soft, nutritious foods and stay hydrated.

Resume brushing and flossing after 24 hours, but avoid the extraction area initially. If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, or swelling beyond 2–3 days, contact our office right away.

After Composite (White) Fillings

Composite fillings are hardened completely before you leave our office, but care is still needed as your mouth recovers.

Tips for a smooth recovery:

  • Avoid chewing or drinking hot beverages until numbness wears off.
  • Mild sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common.
  • Injection site soreness may occur—Tylenol or Ibuprofen can help.

If sensitivity worsens or your bite feels uneven, please contact our Frisco office for a quick adjustment.
